Researchers from the University of Waterloo are launching a new battery research centre that will engage in a critical position in creating the electrical vehicles of tomorrow.

The Ontario Battery and Electrochemistry Research Centre (OBEC), led by Waterloo researchers Linda Nazar and Michael Pope, will be Canada’s latest facility tasked with advancing future-technology electric vehicle battery advancement.

OBEC’s first funding is sourced from a $5 million investment decision earmarked to deal with countrywide and international problems manufactured by the Canada Basis for Innovation (CFI) and Waterloo. It will also host other Ontario-centered battery and electrochemical scientists to collaborate across many provide chain demands this kind of as battery resources manufacturing, recycling, and highly developed manufacturing.

The facility will appear to progress research throughout all-sound-point out, steel-air batteries, metallic-sulfur, and those batteries primarily based on options to lithium like sodium, an ample and affordable substance. Scientists will have accessibility to focused applications they can use to help find out novel electrode and electrolyte resources when interfacing with significant battery components in a dry-home environment. This will include things like an highly developed battery fabrication facility with the potential to manufacture significant structure pouch and cylindrical cells.

“As we drive the limits in terms of material functionality, electrochemical strength devices grow to be progressively elaborate,” said Nazar, a professor in the Section of Chemistry and Canada Study Chair in Stable State Strength Products.
